Emily Murray<\/strong>, founder and editor of the award-winning blog and brand The Pink House<\/a> has written about her home for us before. We have now captured her joie de vivre on film, exploring new parts of her home,\u00a0talking interiors<\/strong>, colour <\/strong>and carpet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Why The Pink House?<\/h4>\n

Pink<\/strong> has always been my favourite colour, but it\u2019s much more than a colour; the word stands for joy<\/strong>, passion<\/strong>and playfulness<\/strong> in my mind. So, calling my home and my business The Pink House<\/a> is only partly about the rose-tinted hue \u2013 it also means I live and work somewhere that makes me happy!<\/p>\n\n

Any particular shades of pink?<\/h4>\n

I\u2019m particularly partial to soft blush-rose pink<\/strong>, and accents of fluoro pink<\/strong>. I also created what I believe to be the perfect goes-with-anything pink: my very own Pink House<\/a> paint that\u2019s available to buy on the Mylands<\/a> website.<\/p>\n\n

What inspires your creativity?<\/h4>\n

Happiness!<\/strong> Covid and lockdown has taught me that I find it very hard to be creative when I\u2019m feeling down. But if I focus on finding things that make me feel good \u2013 and these include exercise, chatting with friends, doing things that challenge me and drinking very nice wine \u2013 then the creativity comes naturally.<\/p>\n\n

Playful. Practical. Pink.<\/p>\n\n

What is your interior design process?<\/h4>\n

I start with how the room will be used and by whom, then ascertain how that person or those people want to feel when they\u2019re in it, and how the room fits with the rest of the home or property. I like to start with one colour<\/strong>, piece of d\u00e9cor<\/strong> or item of furniture<\/strong> and build a mood board from there, layering colours<\/strong>, patterns<\/strong>and items as I go. I like to take my time over the room and ideally not have to make all the decisions until some of the room has been finished. I\u2019m quite a slow decorator by nature, but I\u2019m an impatient person too which can be quite a conflict!<\/p>\n\n

Why did you choose carpet?<\/h4>\n

I\u2019ve lived in homes with bare, draughty bedroom floors<\/strong> and I can confidently say that I much prefer a lovely soft wool carpet<\/strong> underfoot! I like to feel cosy in my bedroom, plus I love how a quality carpet helps the space feel more luxurious and gives an opportunity to add pattern<\/strong> to that dimension. I haven\u2019t used much wallpaper<\/strong> in my current house \u2013 I like having plain walls as a background for artwork<\/strong> \u2013 but as a pattern lover the fact I can still incorporate pattern on my floors<\/strong>, thanks to Alternative Flooring<\/strong>, is a real joy!<\/p>\n\n

Having carpet on the first and second floor landings and stairs means the whole family\u2019s feet stay warm when we run up and down to the shower room. I love the texture of the Iconic Wool Stripe carpet<\/a> and it looks so smart and works so well with my hallway tiles \u2013 and with pink<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n

Which designs and where?<\/h4>\n

I especially love whimsical floral designs<\/strong> in bedrooms<\/strong> \u2013 the Capello Shell<\/a> is my all-time favourite patterned carpet<\/strong> so I\u2019m delighted to have it in both the master and the spare bedroom. For the kids\u2019 bedrooms the geometric Honeycomb<\/a> is perfect \u2013 grown-up enough to take them into their teens and beyond (or to work in a spare bedroom or study if we change the usage of their rooms), but still playful.<\/p>\n\n

Tips for stairs?<\/h4>\n

I say have some fun with them, and don\u2019t be afraid to go bold. If you want to keep the runner a more neutral colour<\/strong>, consider painting the treads and risers in something a little brighter to show off your carpet<\/strong>. Also, there\u2019s no rule that the stairs have to be the same colour as the bannister, so don\u2019t feel constrained. Painting the often \u2018orangey\u2019 wood you often find on bannisters in period properties can help pull a colour scheme together and smarten up the stairs. I love dark bannisters contrasted against lighter walls. When it comes to choosing the runner itself, pay attention to detail, such as the colour of the whipping. It generally won\u2019t cost any more to choose whipping in a bright or contrasting colour, so why not pick a brighter colour than you might feel comfortable using on a larger surface, and have a bit of fun with it.<\/p>\n\n

Coco on the stairs!<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Why buy local?<\/h4>\n

Our excellent local carpet fitter Lordship Flooring<\/a> made light work of installing our carpets. It\u2019s always satisfying to use quality local suppliers, and each time Lordship has provided us with an excellent service with minimal fuss. Our carpets have all been beautifully fitted and they also dealt with our old laminate flooring which was extremely helpful.<\/p>\n\n

Should every home have a pet?<\/h4>\n

Our Ragdoll cat<\/strong>, Coco<\/strong>, was definitely the best thing to happen to The Pink House<\/a> in 2020. We got her a year ago when she was just a tiny scrap of fluff and the whole family has been in love from her from that first day. Including the Pink House Husband<\/strong>, who claimed not to be a cat man\u2026 now he encourages her to lick the leftover milk from his cereal bowl!<\/p>\n\n

\"\"<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Emily on her trapeze<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Who taught you the trapeze?<\/h4>\n

I went to static trapeze <\/strong>classes near my home in South East London<\/strong>, but my gymnastics background meant I knew a fair few moves already. I\u2019ve always had reasonable upper body strength \u2013 as well as being a former national squad gymnast I rowed when I was at Cambridge<\/strong> and have kept a base level of fitness since then \u2013 which definitely makes it easier to get myself up and round the trapeze!<\/p>\n\n

Desert Island luxury.<\/h4>\n

Silk bedding and eye mask set. Plus, mattress and bed. That\u2019s one thing, right?!<\/p>\n\n

Lockdown tip.<\/h4>\n

Drink your wine from crystal glasses<\/strong> and you feel (a bit) like you\u2019ve gone out to dinner. Mine are from Soho Home<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
