Alternative Flooring<\/a> celebrates 25 years<\/strong> of fabulous floors.\u00a0 We introduced our nation to a world of exotic natural fibres, embraced the wonder fibre wool, collaborated with some of the greatest designers and iconic brands to create award\u2013winning joyful patterns. From now until the year end our IG<\/a> will share landmark products, favourite projects, creative campaigns and memorable moments as we celebrate this incredible journey. The Alternative adventure continues with exciting times ahead.<\/p>\n\n

Q&A with Lorna Haigh, creative and marketing director, Alternative Flooring<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

When did the story begin? <\/strong><\/h3>\n

In the 90s, natural fibre flooring<\/strong> started to become popular in the UK. It was very much claimed by those desiring the cottage and country look<\/strong> and back then, Coir<\/a> was definitely the firm favourite.<\/p>\n\n

How many collections do you now have? \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We have over forty carpet ranges<\/strong> but they fall into categories; and there are so many different textures. Sustainable natural plant fibre Coir,<\/a> Seagrass,<\/a> Sisal<\/a> and Jute<\/a>; Wool<\/a> a chunky and fine look; Stripes & Patterns<\/a>; eco Barefoot<\/a> our deep pile handmade luxury carpet and Faux<\/a> our man-made fibre offer.<\/p>\n\n

How important is a British brand today? \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Very. Alternative Flooring is a British company with a history of craftsmanship<\/strong> and a spark of curiosity\u00a0<\/strong>that inspires flooring to be different.<\/p>\n\n

I hope that Alternative has changed the way people feel about their floors\u2026. One of our new marketing lines is \u2018flooring you fall in love with<\/strong>.\u2019 It is something we feel strongly about. Our carpets have oodles of character.<\/p>\n\n

So many man hours and resources go into making a carpet<\/strong>.\u00a0 The process is a lengthy one and one not often explained. Carpet is a textile like no other. It is designed, fibre sourced, made into yarn and then woven or tufted. And then backed. For us it is never ‘just a carpet’.<\/p>\n\n

Our beloved textile has a worth that is why we charge for samples. For years, the carpet industry<\/strong> has done itself a dis-service. Pile it high, sell it cheap\u2026. that\u2019s not what we are about. There is a pride in the making<\/strong>, the crafting<\/strong> or as we like to say manu-crafting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Tell us about your favourite campaigns.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Oh, the Pink Cowboy Boots… when the new owners bought Alternative Flooring in 2004, we really played up to the Alternative name and produced a campaign which involved unusual shoes and feet on carpet<\/strong>. It caused quite a stir\u2026 and got us noticed. \u00a0It\u2019s a great memory.<\/p>\n\n

The Be Campaign<\/strong> followed in 2010; with appealing messaging Be Natural<\/strong>, Be Bold<\/strong>; Be Inspired<\/strong>. Simple but clear statements which gave our brand and products personality.<\/p>\n\n

Name a few milestones along the way?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Alternative really started paving the way in 2008. We developed some new stripes called Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll.<\/a> There were other stripes in the market place, but we looked at it differently.\u00a0 We gave the carpets fun names, Wild Thing <\/strong>and Roxanne<\/strong> and were adventurous with colour. Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll won its first award in dark greens, bold red. We won the prestigious Homes & Gardens<\/a> magazine design award in 2008, a first for carpet.<\/p>\n\n

Many of the milestones are technology based. We were early to Social Media<\/strong> \u2013 our first Facebook<\/strong> post was in 2010! Our Instagram<\/strong> full of gorgeous in-situ shots has more followers than some of the big high street flooring names. It is all organic growth and authentic followers who are very engaged with our great creative content.<\/p>\n\n

We launched Click \u2018n\u2019 Collect <\/strong>for our Make Me A Rug<\/a> service in 2017 \u2013 and our recent Show Me My Room<\/a> uses the very latest technology to bring your floors alive with our carpets.<\/p>\n\n

When did you introduce pattern? <\/strong><\/h3>\n

In 2011 we launched Quirky<\/strong> our first pattern collection of runners followed by the broadloom (full width) version in 2014. \u00a0It is so exciting to bring pattern to the floor<\/strong>. Divine Savages<\/a> who have Flowers of Thorpe Quirky B x Liberty Fabrics<\/a> in their home have publicly started \u2018The Patterned Carpet Appreciation Club\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>on their Insta!<\/p>\n\n

Are we braver with pattern and colour? <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Oh, yes, I think so\u2026 people have always loved a bit of pattern on the stairs<\/strong> but now it is considered for living spaces and bedrooms too. Pattern with a capital P as it is Practical too!<\/p>\n\n

Who are your collaborators?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The wonderful Margo Selby<\/a>, Ashley Hicks<\/a> and Ben Pentreath<\/a> have all been constants in our Quirky collection.<\/p>\n\n

What are your red-carpet moments?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The first big one was the Homes & Gardens Award<\/a> for Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll<\/a> 2008; then becoming the first flooring company to become a CoolBrand<\/strong><\/a> in 2014 was just amazing. Our entry in the book followed Apple! The Gold House Beautiful Awards<\/strong><\/a> for Quirky<\/strong><\/a> and the recent Design Guild Mark Award<\/strong><\/a> for Quirky B x Liberty Fabrics.<\/a><\/p>\n\n

What are the best-sellers?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

All our product categories do well. There is something for everyone, a textile floorcovering for everywhere in the home; now including kitchen and bathrooms and even outdoors with our Anywhere range.<\/p>\n\n

What are you most proud of? <\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Alternative people. We have been bold and passionate and we haven\u2019t been afraid to try new things \u2013 sparkly carpet \u2013 who\u2019d have thought?\u00a0 We have embraced new technology and applied new thinking.<\/p>\n\n

Also, being a strong supporter of the Campaign for Wool.<\/strong><\/a> Wool is a wonder fibre. Renewable, inherently fire retardant, anti-static, soft underfoot and a natural insulator. Its properties need to be championed and Alternative is a vehicle where we can make this happen. This year we supported emerging young talent<\/strong> with both the Campaign for Wool<\/strong> and British Wool<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

We celebrate difference\u2026 our new strapline \u2018different feels good\u2019<\/strong> embodies what we stand for. Our customers care about what products they put in their homes and as we care too, it is a love match.<\/p>\n\n

AND I have to say seeing a gem of an idea come to life in people\u2019s homes. The number of people who have exclaimed that their Alternative carpet is the most favourite thing in their house.\u00a0 This brings me pure carpet joy!<\/p>\n\n
