Jamie Watkins and Tom Kennedy, aka <\/em>Divine Savages<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n

Divine Savages<\/a> was founded in South East London in 2016 by husbands Jamie Watkins and Tom Kennedy. Through a shared passion for quirky interiors and styling they set out to do interiors their way and put their experience in fashion and design to create a new brand for the artistic shopper; a brand that mixes influences from classic prints, bold fashion and iconic modern design yet always with their signature Divine Savages twist.<\/p>\n

Divine Mission: to inject a splash of wonder into your home with collections that reflect our passion for daring design and patterns with a flourish of both the divine and the savage.<\/p>\n

When Divine Savages wanted patterned carpet on their floors they turned to Alternative Flooring. Where else can you find carpet in the softest marble and floral meadows in wool? It is time for a behind-the-scenes house tour and a chat with Jamie and Tom for some insider inspiration.<\/p>\n\n

Here’s our Q&A…<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n
DID YOU MEET IN\u00a0THE INTERIOR WORLD?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Nope! We met many years ago in 2006 out on the town in London, and what started with a drink in a bar led to marriage – almost 5 years now.<\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve always had a shared love of interiors, but it wasn\u2019t really until we managed to buy this place that we were able to finally put our own stamp on a home. Our passion for interiors\u00a0<\/strong>steadily grew over the years and almost two years ago we created and launched Divine Savages<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 with Tom\u2019s background in fashion\u00a0<\/strong>and branding, and mine in marketing and strategy it\u2019s a good partnership.<\/p>\n\n

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Working together is really fun and seeing Divine Savages\u00a0<\/strong>grow, and building the brand together is so rewarding.<\/p>\n\n

We both have our clear strengths so it works really well \u2013 we don\u2019t interfere with each other and can just get on with what we do best.<\/p>\n\n

Jamie focus\u2019 on the business side of things \u2013 marketing, promotions, connecting with designers and stylists, and also manages all of the Instagram<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Tom\u2019s in charge of the creative side – design, branding and our collections.<\/p>\n\n

WHERE DOES\u00a0YOUR\u00a0DESIGN INSPIRATION\u00a0FOR COLLECTIONS\u00a0COME FROM?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

We find\u00a0inspiration\u00a0<\/strong>in many different places. Living in London is great \u2013 such a vibrant city with so much going on, museums<\/strong>, events, exhibitions\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 so we try and soak up as much as we can.<\/p>\n\n

The natural world\u00a0<\/strong>is also a huge source of inspiration for our designs \u2013 we\u2019ve been lucky enough to visit some amazing places and landscapes over the years.<\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re massive vintage\u00a0<\/strong>fans \u2013 so you\u2019ll often find us wandering around junk shops, antiques fairs and markets finding new treasures that inspire us.<\/p>\n\n

Art deco\u00a0<\/strong>definitely has a special place in our hearts \u2013 many of our wallpapers\u00a0<\/strong>are influenced by this period \u2013 Deco Martini<\/strong><\/a> collection and more recently our Gershwing<\/strong><\/a> collection.<\/p>\n\n

DESCRIBE THE STYLE IN YOUR OWN HOME AND HOW YOU PUT SCHEMES TOGETHER?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Definitely Maximalist<\/strong>\u2013 we don\u2019t shy away from\u00a0bold pattern\u00a0<\/strong>and print.\u00a0We really live our brand!<\/p>\n\n

In our recent bedroom makeover,\u00a0<\/strong>we wanted to create a boutique hotel <\/strong>vibe \u2013 a place we can relax in and a space where it felt a little extravagant, something special.<\/p>\n\n

Sumptuous\u00a0<\/strong>and luxurious<\/strong>\u2013 we made a conscious decision to get rid of the TV in the bedroom, a space we can unwind in after a hard day\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n

We knew we wanted to use our new wallpaper \u2013 we\u2019d just created Nocturnal Fauncation<\/strong> with teals\u00a0<\/strong>and emerald\u00a0<\/strong>greens so that set the\u00a0colour schemes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We usually find that our d\u00e9cor projects <\/strong>start with one \u2018hero\u2019 piece or item and it grows from there.<\/p>\n\n

We like to mix eclectic vintage and contemporary pieces in our home.<\/p>\n\n

And artwork\u00a0<\/strong>is important to us \u2013 it\u2019s actually getting a little out of control as we have so many frames and pictures now but we enjoy switching things out and bringing old prints back out from storage to freshen things up.<\/p>\n\n

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT ALTERNATIVE FLOORING?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Divine Savages<\/strong><\/a> is all about the bold\u00a0<\/strong>use of colour<\/strong>and pattern<\/strong>. Creating a rich, luxurious and inviting interior.<\/p>\n\n

When we were sourcing carpet for our bedroom and hallway renovation, we really struggled to find unique, bold, colourful carpets \u2013 until we found Alternative! We’re really loving how you’re pushing this in carpets and rugs!<\/p>\n\n

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE\u00a0ALTERNATIVE\u2019S\u00a0BOUTIQUE SERPENTINE MALACHITE\u00a0FOR YOUR BEDROOM?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

The colours! We instantly fell in love. It reminds us of the iridescent colours\u00a0<\/strong>of petrol, or the beautiful natural pattern of marble<\/strong>. The carpet was spot on for our vision of creating a luxurious, boutique vibe\u00a0<\/strong>and it definitely addsa sense of drama\u00a0<\/strong>to the space which we love.<\/p>\n\n

WHAT IS\u00a0IT LIKE WALKING ON\u00a0FLOWERS OF THORPE\u00a0IN YOUR\u00a0HALLWAY AND STAIRS?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

The deep pile is a dream to walk on \u2013 there\u2019s nothing like that feeling of bare feet on carpet.<\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re huge fans of\u00a0Liberty prints<\/strong>, so this design instantly spoke to us – plus the pink accents\u00a0<\/strong>were perfect for our colour scheme.<\/p>\n\n

The bold flowers\u00a0<\/strong>remind us of 1970s florals\u00a0<\/strong>– a touch of chintz that we love in our home!<\/p>\n\n

In the hallway and stairs, we used a delicate pink on the walls. This subtle colour allowed us to be bold on the floor instead of the walls, which was really fun!<\/p>\n\n

DO YOU THINK WE ARE BECOMING BRAVER WITH PATTERN?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Definitely! You only have to scroll through Instagram and peruse the latest interiors magazines to see spaces filled with a riot of pattern and print.<\/p>\n\n

People are embracing\u00a0<\/strong>bolder\u00a0<\/strong>colours<\/strong>and pattern and we couldn\u2019t be happier. When we launched Divine Savages<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>our mission was to inject a splash of wonder and to turn every room into a living masterpiece, so seeing more people adopt this mantra makes us smile.<\/p>\n\n

I think it also has a lot to do with the current times we live in \u2013 it\u2019s a bit doom and gloom out there so we\u2019re nesting more and creating comfortable, vibrant spaces that we love to come home to. The joy of staying in is real!<\/p>\n\n

BIGGEST HOME EXTRAVAGANCE?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

We do love collecting different\u00a0artwork<\/strong>\u2013 we have an original portrait\u00a0<\/strong>from our very talented friend Hester Finch<\/strong> which we love, we\u2019ve also got a pair of Obey prints<\/strong><\/a> which were one of the first pieces we bought together.<\/p>\n\n

We also have a taxidermy peacock which we call Brenda \u2013 she\u2019s glorious and really adds a sense of wonder to our\u00a0living room.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Our next project is a garden studio this summer which will be a big job. We\u2019re not looking forward to the mess, but it is another space to decorate which we\u2019re very excited about!<\/p>\n\n

NEXT BIG INTERIOR\u00a0TREND?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Greens\u00a0<\/strong>will continue to impress and velvet\u00a0<\/strong>isn\u2019t going away anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n

There\u2019s a move towards more\u00a0natural and organic\u00a0<\/strong>materials \u2013 think stone<\/strong>, marble<\/strong>, and rattan\u00a0<\/strong>as well as the continued plants obsession \u2013 just wish we could keep ours alive!<\/p>\n\n

Florals\u00a0<\/strong>are still going strong and of course a continued love for Maximalism.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re also seeing a move away from rigid lines and a shift towards more\u00a0curves<\/strong>\u2013 especially in furniture and sofas. Gorgeous!<\/p>\n\n

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO AT THE MOMENT?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

We are busy working on our Natural History Museum<\/strong><\/a> collaboration, which is really exciting. For our next collection we\u2019ll be creating 5 new designs across wallpapers, fabrics and cushions taking inspiration from the museum\u2019s archives. We can\u2019t wait to launch this!<\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re also going to be adding more limited edition prints to our line up with our signature Divine Savages<\/a> twist.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Silk scarves\u00a0<\/strong>are also coming soon. With Tom\u2019s background in fashion it made sense for us to add this line to our range, and the prints are looking gorgeouswe must say!<\/p>\n\n
