Mid-Century Modern\u00a0<\/strong>design describes architecture<\/strong>, furniture\u00a0<\/strong>and graphic design\u00a0<\/strong>from the middle of the twentieth century (roughly from the mid-thirties to early- seventies). That\u2019s quite a few decades and this style can mean different things to different people.<\/p>\n\n

Believe it or not it started out as a minimalist movement before it cheerily swept through the suburbs in the forties and fifties with a frenzy of post-war home-making. Whatever your take, mid-century modern continues to capture our popular imagination.<\/p>\n\n

Mark Hampshire and Keith Stephenson AKA <\/em>Mini Moderns<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n

On one level it\u2019s an attractive, accessible, versatile style that can be easily mixed and matched into interior schemes. You can pepper pieces in without having to rethink the d\u00e9cor\u00a0<\/strong>of the whole room. It\u2019s great for small urban spaces or open-plan living and is now used in a more eclectic way. Others may invest in beautifully restored or iconic pieces by legendary designers such as Charles and Ray Eames<\/strong>, Robin and Lucienne Day\u00a0<\/strong>and Florence Knoll<\/strong>. Here the\u00a0\u2018less is more\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>design philosophy applies.<\/p>\n\n

There\u2019s a lot of interior components to consider and a bewildering set of decisions to make – but the guiding principles are simple, informal, fuss-free with functional goods and the honest use of materials.<\/p>\n\n

Post-war Britain saw the rise of a young Lucienne Day\u00a0<\/strong>whose work was amongst that featured in the Festival of Britain<\/strong>. She forged her name in the textile and design industry by conveying the optimistic national mood through her modernist patterns, which came to define mid-century print design.<\/p>\n\n

Alternative Flooring\u00a0<\/strong>and The Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation<\/strong><\/a> have recently worked together to launch the Authentic Lucienne<\/strong><\/a> carpet runner collection \u2013 a celebration of archive carpet designs by one of Britain\u2019s best-loved 20th century designers.<\/p>\n\n

In 1964 Lucienne Day created a collection of bold geometric designs for the Wilton Royal\u00a0<\/strong>\u2018Architects\u2019 Nova\u2019 range. Developed for the needs of architects, these carpets were designed to complement the spatial qualities of modern interiors.<\/p>\n\n

Two of these designs, Octagon and Squares and Diamonds<\/strong><\/a> stand out for their vibrant colourways and have now been reproduced and expertly woven on original looms by Alternative Flooring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
